A Beginner's Drone Pre-Flight Checklist

August 26, 2026 · 1 min read

Experienced pilots run through pre-flight checks almost automatically. As a beginner, a written checklist prevents the small mistakes that cause most early incidents.

Before you leave home

  • Charge batteries fully and confirm you're bringing enough for the flight you're planning.
  • Check current and forecast weather (wind, rain, visibility) for your destination.
  • Confirm the location isn't inside restricted or controlled airspace requiring authorization you haven't obtained.

At the flight location

  • Inspect propellers for cracks, chips, or looseness — a damaged propeller is one of the most common causes of in-flight loss of control.
  • Confirm firmware on the drone and controller is up to date; some safety features ship in firmware updates.
  • Check that the gimbal moves freely and the camera lens is clean.
  • Power on the controller before the drone, and wait for a full GPS lock (shown in the app) before takeoff.
  • Calibrate the compass if the app suggests it, or if you've traveled a significant distance since the last flight.

Just before takeoff

  • Confirm return-to-home altitude is set higher than any obstacles between the drone and your position.
  • Do a low hover (a few seconds a meter or two off the ground) to confirm stable behavior before committing to full altitude.
  • Identify your planned flight path and any people, vehicles, or structures to avoid.

After landing

  • Power off the drone before the controller, and log anything unusual for review before the next flight.

Running this same sequence every time builds the habit that keeps flights routine rather than eventful.
