Why the effects stack
A drone relying on GPS for position-hold and a compass for heading, during a storm that degrades both simultaneously, loses two of its primary stabilization references at once — precisely when a pilot most needs the automation to work correctly. Add marginal-range communication instability and a "close call" scenario becomes more plausible than any single factor alone would suggest.
A simple rule of thumb by Kp level
- Kp 0-4: Normal precautions apply; fly as you normally would.
- Kp 5 (G1 storm): Fly conservatively — closer range, lower altitude, be ready to switch to manual mode.
- Kp 6 (G2 storm): Consider postponing non-essential flights, especially in GPS-heavy modes like automated waypoint missions.
- Kp 7+ (G3-G5 storm): Postpone flying if possible; these events are associated with widespread GPS degradation and are rare enough that waiting a few hours to a day is usually practical.
